// web design, content management
The Bahamas’ Ministry of the Environment and Housing is responsible for protecting, conserving, and managing their natural environment. They also focus on responding to housing needs for low- and middle-income families and individuals.
The Ministry needed a website that would allow them to communicate their goals and initiatives to Bahamians. Previously, their primary method of outreach had been through their Facebook group. Having a dedicated space would broaden their ability to engage with citizens and provide a streamlined method of archiving and organizing the Ministry’s many public releases.
The website needed to be dynamic and informative with an emphasis on easy access to information. The site would play host to a mass of information, including departmental directives, governmental initiatives/policies, news updates, minister announcements, and official publications. We were tasked with identifying and amalgamating information from their Facebook page, government sub-page and provided content.
After analyzing and itemizing their content, it was systematically placed and categorized until all content could be derived from a common denominator. With the content streamlined, we focused on ensuring the large volume of information would be easy to assimilate through a clean, logical hierarchy of text.
We applied the Bahamian national colours conservatively to convey a corporate, Bahamian atmosphere. To accommodate a user base with low literacy, much of the information includes accompanying imagery to lend visual context to the text. We developed a logical, user-friendly navigation and system of icons to ensure departments, releases and resources are easy to find and access. News and videos are highlighted to garner user engagement.
The new website is a polished, dynamic hub of information. The intuitive structure makes the information easy to access, while the functionality promotes user engagement. The site serves as an efficient and streamlined medium for allowing the Ministry to communicate its objectives and actively engage with Bahamians.
In early 2017, the Bahamian government sustained a regime change. Website functionality or content may differ since original launch.
