Navigating connectivity for a new generation
Seafarers’ International Union of Canada
// web design, content management
Serving since 1938, the Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU) is the most influential sailors’ union in the country. They provide advocacy, support and community to unlicensed sailors working aboard vessels on the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, and the east and west coasts. They are thousands of members strong and growing.
The SIU aims to ensure that Canadian seafarers’ jobs are safe, secure and stable. They advocate for fair labour standards, the enforcement of Canadian cabotage law, and the enforcement of Canadian labour laws.
The SIU needed a refreshed online presence to more effectively communicate with a new generation of seafarers. The new website would need to demonstrate their relevance and influence with a more modernized visual and technical approach. Our goal was to create an engaging, contemporary and user-friendly website, highlighting SIU’s vital role in the seafaring industry.
We developed a new design and interface for their website while visually enhancing their corporate brand. The design portrays a classic nautical theme with large blocks of white and navy and highlights of red to build upon SIU’s corporate identity. Individual pages feature large images depicting genuine seafaring photography and other maritime imagery to portray the various sections and information.
The site uses parallax scrolling, which involves the background moving at a slower rate than the foreground. Each section’s written content slides over a corresponding header image banner. This creates a three dimensional effect as you scroll, building depth and visual interest into the pages.
The website acts as a hub of timely information, resources and news for members and prospective members alike. The structure is divided into logical sections, accessible through a clearly organized top navigation bar. The website has been developed in both English and French versions, and is functionally responsive to view accurately and proportionately on any device.
Overall, the website is effective in communicating SIU’s history and relevance as a vital proponent of the seafaring industry. The communicative tone conveys a brotherhood proud of their hard work and skill, building an atmosphere of community and dignity within the Union. The website demonstrates SIU’s values of integrity, commitment and adeptness to their members, the Canadian government, and the general public, promoting their organization as a professional and valuable organization.
